S
amui Airport is a certified commercial airport that commenced operation of services since 25 April 1989. Located at Tambon Bophut, Amploe Koh Samui, Surat
Thani Province, the site of the airport used to be a coconut plantation. However the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand considered that the size and
physical features of this plot of land were suitable for building an airport.
On 25 September 1996, Samui Airport was granted permission to operate as a customs airport, to accommodate airlines operating scheduled air services to/from
international destinations. The Airport was then able to provide more convenience to tourists who can clear customs, immigration and quarantine formalities
within the airport terminal as well as obtaining Visa-on-arrival (You can read about visas here) and VAT refund service.
R
egarding the design and construction of Samui Airport, much attention has been made to blend into the environment of a tropical island by using natural
materials to build open-air pavilions. Its 2,100 meters long and 45 meters wide runway is strong enough to support landing of 70-ton jet aircraft such as
Airbus A320-A319 and Boeing 737. These small jets take only 50 minutes to fly from Bangkok to Koh Samui. Samui Airport is a hub for domestic and
international flights.
A
t present Samui Airport has six terminal buildings, four for handling domestic flights and two for international flights. The 7,300 square meters commercial
space can serve 16,000 passengers daily or 6 million passengers annually. To support increasing number of passengers, an expansion and refurbishment plan
is in progress, expected to be completed in the near future.
Samui Airport is the first airport in Thailand to receive Carbon Footprint label from Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization)
or TGO in 2016 and 2017. There are also 4 other areas certified Carbon Footprint for Organization in 2017 which include Sukhothai Airport, Trat Airport,
Bangkok Airways Offices and Hangar Facilities.
S
amui Park Avenue, a breezy outdoor promenade of 2,285sq.m. opening since July 2008 features the best dining, shopping and entertainment venues on the island.
Air travel inevitably involves a certain amount of waiting, and Bangkok Airways wanted to offer our passengers some innovative options – not just the crass
row of duty-free outlets that is so typical of airports these days. Samui Park Avenue is not only for passenger but for everyone. It will be used as a venue
for monthly activities such as concerts and art exhibitions.
The facility offers 2 dining 3 cafes and 12 shops such as Whittard Of Chelsea, Swensens , Jim Thompson, Bookazine, Harnn, Firenze and Relax Massage etc.
