Thongson Bay or Melati Beach

T he beach in Thongson Bay is covered with greyish, fine sand with an addition of small pebbles and seashell dust. It is not too wide, especially at high tide. On both its ends the shore and the bottom are stony. Yet, in the centre entering the water should be careful: there are some areas covered with sharp corals.
The water on Thongson is shallow and cloudy. Walking in the water up to knees on this beach isn’t so exciting: you should always be aware in order not to get hurt, and you cannot watch frisky fish, which can be found here as everywhere else on Koh Samui, properly because of muddy water. You feel like kayaking more on Thongson more than diving into the water.

T hongson Bay is situated on the cape Plai Laem, near the most northern point of Koh Samui. In the neighbourhood, a little bit higher, there is Samrong Bay: it is separated from Thongson only by a high hill with a rocky foot. The coast of Thongson Bay is a sandy beach, which is about half a kilometer in length. In the east, it ends with a bare rock and a stony deposit stretching out into the sea.
It is possible to find an open to public drive to Thongson Bay, if you follow the signs directing to Thongsonbay Bungalows. The road to the beach is winding, it goes around the walls of a spa-hotel ‘Melati’, after that sand replaces pavement, and the way goes on through a grove of coconut palm trees.

Tongson Bay Beach

O ut of all the beach entertainments, only kayaks can be found on Thongson Beach. Although the beach is quite lived-in despite its small size, there are few people here. Apart from two above-mentioned hotels, there are quite large residential complexes on Thongson, which occupy the slopes of a hill in the western part of a bay.

Y ou will have to go to other beaches in search of entertainments, sights, souvenirs, diversity of cuisines (there is only one small restaurant on Thongson). The nearest options in the western direction – Big Buddha (about 4 km away) and Bophut (about 7 km away). If you go southward – Choeng Mon and Chaweng, 2 km and 8 km away respectively. In terms of location, Thongson is convenient for those, who arrive in Koh Samui by plane: only 20 minutes by taxi and you are here. The same can be said in reference to those, who get off in a quay in Big Buddha, in this case the journey by taxi will only take 10 minutes.
